Fall is a beautiful season. Sometimes our yards need a little bit of extra care to clear the leaves, or prepare our lawns properly before the cold bitter winter sets in. Let Lawns of Distinction help you with a fall cleanup.

Basic Fall Clean Up

We remove leaves from gardens, lawns, shrubs, bushes, and along fence lines. We gather leaves by using powerful blowers and gather into a central area. Once gathered we do one of two things.

1) If available, we take the debris curb side for municipal cleanup/pickup by the city .

2) We load our tarpped truck and take the waste to municipal dump sites that are located throughout Kitchener Waterloo.

Garden Tear Down

To properly prepare your garden for the winter months and to aid in long term maintenance of your gardens, properly tearing down your garden is essential.

Fall Fertilizer:

You need to properly put your lawn to bed for winter. Lawns that are discolored, slow-growing, or have invading weeds or other pest problems may not be properly fertilized. Fertilizer is important for healthy, vigorous plant growth and development. Because many of the required nutrients for turfgrass are found naturally in the soil, fertilization practices focus on the supply of three primary nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. To ensure good winter survival and early-spring green-up, fall fertilizer is a must!

Aeration:

Beyond basic maintenance of your lawn, it is important to ensure that nutrients can reach the soil beneath your grass. Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn as it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils restricts circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil.

Why Aerate my lawn?

  • Does your lawn get heavy use? Children and pets can compact your lawn and prevent water and nutrients from reaching the grass roots.

  • Newly constructed home? Often, there is little or even no topsoil left on your new yard after your home is built. Yards left with simple subsoil during or after construction become compacted by foot or machienery traffic.

  • Problems with dry grass or a yard that is spongy?. This might mean your lawn has an excessive thatch problem. Aeration is recomended where the thatch layer is greater than 3/4 of an inch.

  • Was sod used to create your lawn? You may have different soil layers on top of one another. Clearly the soil used to grow the sod could be  of a different texture or density that you have on your property. A course layer of soil prevents proper drainage and improper root development. Aerating breaks up the layering, allowing water to flow through the soil more easily and reach the roots.
